Diseases of the Retina

Retinal conditions can be complex, but we’re here to help you understand them. Learn about common retinal diseases, the symptoms to watch for, and how we provide effective treatments to manage and preserve your vision.

Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Age-related macular degeneration is a progressive condition that affects central vision, leading to blurred or lost vision in the center of the visual field. It is one of the leading causes of vision loss in older adults.

Artery Occlusions

An artery occlusion occurs when a blockage in a retinal artery cuts off blood flow to the retina, leading to sudden vision loss. This condition is often associated with risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the blood vessels of the retina, leading to vision problems and, if untreated, can result in blindness. Early detection and management are crucial for preserving sight.

Dislocated Lens

A dislocated lens happens when the lens in the eye becomes displaced, which can result in blurred vision, double vision, and other visual disturbances. It is often caused by trauma or certain eye conditions.

Macular Hole

A macular hole is a small break in the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision. It can cause blurred or distorted central vision and is most common in older adults.

Epiretinal Membrane

An epiretinal membrane is a thin layer of tissue that forms on the surface of the retina. It can cause vision distortion or blurring and may lead to a condition known as macular pucker, affecting central vision.

Posterior Vitreous Detachment / Flashes & Floaters

Posterior vitreous detachment occurs when the vitreous gel in the eye pulls away from the retina. This can lead to flashes of light and floating spots in the vision, which are common as people age.

Retinal Detachment

Retinal detachment is a serious condition where the retina separates from the back of the eye, leading to a loss of vision. It is considered a medical emergency and requires prompt treatment to prevent permanent vision loss.

Retinal Tears

Retinal tears occur when the retina is stretched or torn, often due to changes in the vitreous gel. If left untreated, retinal tears can lead to retinal detachment and vision loss.

Vein Occlusions

Vein occlusions happen when a retinal vein becomes blocked, leading to sudden vision loss. This condition can cause bleeding and swelling in the retina and is often associated with conditions like hypertension and diabetes.

Central Serous

Central serous retinopathy occurs when fluid builds up under the retina, leading to blurred or distorted central vision. It is often temporary but can recur and affect visual quality.
